I wanted to write to you as a parent of young children and a survivor of child sex trafficking in America. I know firsthand that this conversation that you are going to have with your child is one that has to happen. I never thought I would go through trafficking when I was 13 years old. I didn’t even know that human trafficking existed. Maybe if I knew, it would not have happened to me. Sometimes, statistics feel like big numbers that don’t feel real. Only, I am real and this happened to me.
Before developing this website and these resources, we spent time talking to children —especially those who had experienced abuse, homelessness, and trafficking. Overwhelmingly, we heard that they wished they had been able to have more conversations with their parents or caregivers about sex, healthy relationships, staying safe online, and trafficking, starting as early as 5-years-old. Since we are our children’s first teachers, we decided to develop tools to make it easy for you to start having these conversations and supporting children in living safe lives.
Our activities help kids develop their awareness, identify support systems, and learn to take action on behalf of themselves and others. We believe that opening this communication channel is the most important step you can take to ensure their safety.
